We select beans which from sustainable sources, the process start somewhere around the equator, in a cacao plantation. Then, from the cacao tree, to the pod, to the beans being fermented and drying in the sun, to then being roasted and winnowed,  to being shipped over to Spain, conching, then tempering,  molding, adding fruits and other ingredients, and finally packaging your delicious bar of chocolate..........

Happy = TRACEABLE

When your chocolate is traceable, you know where and who it comes from, as well as how it was made.

This transparency represents protection.

- Protection for YOU, the consumer, in terms of the quality of the chocolate itself, and also insofar as you are not (unwittingly) contributing to abusive labour practices or destruction of the natural world.

- Protection for the Farmer who, in the cacao-to-chocolate production chain, is the person furthest away from you, and also the most vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation.

In our traceable production environment, all players are equal partners. Farmers are paid a fair price (higher than stock market value) not just for their cacao, with extra value being added via investment into farm/coop infrastructure, farmer eduction and local communities.

for more info, see www.slavefreechocolate.org

Happy = ORGANIC

Cacao farming is fundamentally organic in nature: the majority of the world´s cacao farmers are too impoverished to pay for either pesticides or organic certification (an achievement designed for corporate - rather than smallholder - farms)

We believe "Organic" really stands for purity, and for food as nature intended it: free of pesticides, free of additives, and with minimal processing.

This is the chocolate that we believe in, and this is the chocolate that tastes AMAZING!

Our house chocolate is made from 100% organic certified couverture, with the primary source being the Dominican Republic (world leader in organic cacao production), and Peru as secondary source.

We make our bean-to-bar chocolates with absolute simplicity: premium organic-certified nibs (from the Dominican Republic, Peru and Congo), first-pressing cacao butter and raw cane sugar.

Pure and delicious!

Our ice creams and sorbets are out of this world

Warning: visit us, and we WILL make you taste some!

We make our ice cream and sorbets like they used to be made in the old days.

zero artificial flavouring, colourings or preservatives.

Organic Milk

Premium, long vanilla pods from Madagascar.

Pure, natural fruit & fruit pulps (no added sugar!)

Freshly roasted & ground nuts

Jams & sauces and handmade by us

Drizzled in fresh, liquid chocolate and topped in shards of your favourite chocolate (milk, dark & dark)

And the result? Exquisite Ice cream that is Natural, Simple & DELICIOUS!!!

Our Story

We thought the Costa del Sol would be a happier place with a chocolate factory......so we decided to set one up!

The traditional Andalusian hilltop village of Mijas was our location of choice: for its beauty, for its dynamic bustling village atmosphere and for its dry mountain air (humidity being an important control factor in the chocolate-making process).

Since 2012, we have grown from a tiny chocolate factory-shop perched on the balcony of picturesque Constitution Square to a chocolate-inspired Happiness Laboratory, with two locations in Mijas Village.

We started off in 2012 making chocolate (bark, truffles, bars, bonbons, lollipops), and almost from the get-go, noticed that whilst our customers loved our products, the single most appealing thing about visiting a chocolate factory appeared to be getting INSIDE the chocolate factory (as opposed to looking at it through a glass window)!

This is what inspired us to start offering impromtu visits and workshops to the many people wanting to have a go, and we soon realized that the chocolate made by YOU is as important as the chocolate we make ourselves!

And, because you said you wanted to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine whilst waiting for your chocolate to set after your workshop, in 2013 we opened our “Happiness Lab” café facing out onto the sunny terraces of Constitution Square.

In 2014, we custom-built our beautiful factory-shop-café overlooking Mijas´ main “Virgen de la Peña” square to ensure that, as a visitor to Mijas, you can come and make chocolate with us every single day of the week, as well as hang out and enjoy our delicious wares, and people-watch after your workshop.

We also started to make all our own ice cream by hand using organic milk and the purest natural ingredients, along with a range of handmade cakes and gluten-free baked wares.

2015 was the year of the handmade sweet and healthy treats: fudge, honeycomb, marshmallow and energy balls!

The most meaningful events of 2016 have been the transition to Organic,Sustainable and Traceable chocolate, the fact that we have started to grind and conch our own chocolate, as well as the introduction of an organic Cacao-based Skincare range.

Our Name

Mayan Monkey Mijas is a name that describes the connection we make between the origins and the here-and-now of chocolate.

Once upong a time deep in the heart of the Mesoamerican jungle, MONKEYS discovered cacao pods. Even better for them, they also discovered that the fruity pulp surrounding the beans was delicious! What the monkeys didn´t eat was the bean itself, which in its raw state is so bitter as to be inedible.

Sucking the pulp from the bean, they would spit it out once finished. It is this action of bean discarding that led to the proliferation of the cacao tree right throughout that area of Mesoamerica that is today known as political states, such as Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and Peru.

Man didn´t take long to notice the behaviour of Monkey around the colourful cacao tree, and decided to explore and experiment. Over the course of several civilizations, the tree went from grown wild to becoming a cultivar, and the pulp went from being consumed fresh to also becoming fermented into an alcoholic drink.

Fast forward past the Olmecs and Toltecs, all the way to the MAYAS, the civilization that is credited for the creation of chocolate. Known as “Xocolatl”, the very first chocolate was a bitter drink made from fermented, roasted and ground cacao beans, mixed with water, chilli and other spices.

MIJAS is the beautiful mountain village in southern Spain, where we make our chocolate, and invite you to make it with us.

And, hopefully, when you do, your response to the experience is a resounding “mmm!!!”

The circle is complete :))))
